He designed innovative furniture and buildings in Europe and the United States using plywood, steel tubing, and solid wood.

1920: He was one of the youngest students at the Bauhaus in Germany.

1925: He created the "B3 chair" better known as the Wassily Chair, the first bent steel tube chair created in 1925 for Wassily Kandinsky, partly inspired by a bicycle handlebar.

1928: Co-founded the Standard Mobel company for the manufacture and distribution of his furniture.

1935: He became a designer at Isokon, a pioneering company in the use of plywood for domestic furniture.

1946: He began a series of approximately seventy modernist houses mainly in the United States.

1963: He designed the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York

1981: He died in New York
